The urge to create new glass art pieces is a continuous driving force that energizes Sandy and I with excitement every day. We are always making something… many are small items (jewelry, cheese plates, six inch dishes) to replace items sold at the Marriott or Maui Hands or the Lahaina Art Association. In addition to the staples, we also get to create some of the bigger bowls and baskets similar to those that have previously sold. They are “similar” only in general color and feeling… each bowl or basket is unique and truly one-of-a-kind. And, every now and then, we create a totally new design…. that’s the subject of this “What’s New”.
The first two photos are of a new basket design by Bob. They are intended to look like well known flowers. The first photo was created to represent the Black Eyed Susan. Curved strips of opaque and transparent marigold yellow were fused to create the petals. The flower’s center was created using opaque brown glass and black frit (glass chips). To strengthen the piece structurally, transparent Spring Green leaves were fused between petals to complete the design.
The second photo is of a similarly constructed floral basket intended to represent the poinsettia. The petals were created using opaque and transparent red glass; the center using spring green, red, orange and yellow frit on a dark green base; and the leaves using adventurine green. Because of the similarity of technique, these baskets can be found in the “Coral Basket” section of our website. The third photo is of a pair of new dishes that have been added to our repertoire… Pupu Dishes. “Pupu” is Hawaiian for hor d’oeuvre … but much easier to spell! They are 4” by 13” and are currently available with Wave Motif (by Sandy) and Honu Motif (by Bob). These are included in the Cheese Plate section on our website.
The fourth and fifth photos are of bubble bowls created by Sandy. One is of a rainbow rising from the sea. The other is an abstract floral in transparent reds, orange, and marigold yellow. These can be found on our website under Bowls.
Aloha and Mahalo…….Bob
